Waterborne: Both Toxic and Miraculous is a collaboration by the 2021 Chapman Cultural Center Southern Studies Fellows: writer Morgan Thomas and visual artist Benjamin Winans. This mixed-media exhibition presents their research, using the ritual of baptism to view – and complicate – the contaminated Southern legacies of assumed gender norms, white evangelical Christianity, and the increasing toxicity of our watersheds. This is an invitation to dispute these norms with us and to begin imagining a future South.
