“Come now, let us settle the matter,”
    says the Lord.
“Though your sins are like scarlet,
    they shall be as white as snow;
though they are red as crimson,
    they shall be like wool."

Isaiah 1:18
Often paired with Communion, and sometimes called Ex Americus (Out of America) when exhibited alone, this flag was created as the first part of a two-part flag mash-up (the other part makes up the flag in Reckoning) where Winans remixes the American flag and the lesser know Christian flag (a white flag with blue canton and red cross). Hung on the wall as if on a flag pole, the flag takes on the sinister shape of a Klan hood, evoking violence under the surface of something otherwise banal. When paired with Communion, the red stripes (symbolic of patriotic blood spilled for our freedom) are absent, but the blood is still there, embedded in the wood of the pew itself. This piece is both a reimagining, and a sobering reminder of the work still to be done in shaping our nation.
